Our marble Three Shades sculpture is a hand carved interpretation inspired by Auguste Rodin’s famous The Three Shades, one of the figures associated with The Gates of Hell. Relong Sculpture Factory selected natural white marble to give this classical composition a different character from bronze, with a clean surface, subtle stone texture, and a timeless appearance suited to both indoor and outdoor settings.

What Does the Three Shades Sculpture Mean?

The Three Shades represent the souls of the dead standing at the entrance to Hell, conveying despair, warning, and the loss of hope. Inspired by Rodin’s The Gates of Hell, the three identical figures bend forward and point downward, creating a powerful image of those who have reached the threshold of eternal suffering.

The repetition of the same figure is an important part of the composition. Rather than depicting three different people, Rodin arranged the same figure three times around a central point. This creates a sense of unity, repetition, and an endless cycle, while the downward posture reinforces the work’s solemn and dramatic character.

Hand-Carved from a Solid Block of White Marble

This marble Three Shades sculpture is carved by a Relong sculptor with more than 25 years of carving experience. We select a Grade-A natural white marble block and carve the figures directly from the stone, paying close attention to the original composition, body proportions, posture, and overall visual rhythm.

Before carving, our artists study the reference design carefully to understand not only its proportions but also the expressive meaning behind the three figures. This helps us achieve a closer interpretation while allowing the natural qualities of marble to remain visible.
